***WHY CAN'T I SKIP MY TWENTY MINUTES OF READING TONIGHT?***

source unknown

Student A reads 20 minutes five nights of every week;

Student B reads only 4 minutes a night . . . or not at all??

Step 1:  Multiply minutes a night x 5 times each week.

Student A reads 20 min. x 5 times a week = 100 mins./week

Student B reads 4 minutes x 5 times a week = 20 minutes.

Step 2: Multiply minutes a week x 4 weeks in each month.

Student A reads 400 minutes a month.

Student B reads 80 minutes a month.

Step 3: Multiply minutes a month x 9 months/ school year.

Student A reads 3600 minutes in a school year.

Student B reads 720 minutes in a school year.

Student A practices reading the equivalent of ten whole school days a year.  Student B gets the equivalent of only two school days of reading practice.

By the end of the 6th grade, if Student A and Student B maintain these same reading habits, Student A will have read the equivalent of 60 whole school days and Student B will have read the equivalent of only 12 school days.

One would expect the gap of information retained will have widened considerably and so undoubtedly, will school performance.  How do you thing Student B will feel about him/herself as a student?

Some questions to ponder:

Which student would you expect to read better?

Which student would you expect to know more?

Which student would you expect to write better?

Which student would you expect to have a better vocabulary?

Which student would you expect to be more successful in school . . . and in life?

***BOX TOPS FOR EDUCATION:***
We have an amazing opportunity to earn cash for our school through everyday activities: buying groceries, shopping online and making purchases with a credit card. All at no additional cost to you! Box Tops for Education is not just clipping box tops. You can also earn up to 8% back for our school when you shop online and 1% every time you use your credit card.

If you would like to participate in the online shopping it is easy to get started. You can register at www.boxtops4education.com/registration/. Once you have selected Farrer as your school you can go to the Box Top Marketplace to link up to any of the more than 50 stores that participate. Be sure to access their website through the Box Top website in order to get the money for our school.

With Christmas just around the corner this is an easy way to do some of your shopping without leaving your home and you are helping our school at the same time. If you are interested in the credit card that pays the school 1% every time you use it you can apply for it at www.boxtops4education.com.

Of course we can use all of the Box Tops we can get. If every student in the school would donate 1 box top a month we would reach our goal of earning $500 this year. The potential is huge. Several schools in our area earned over $1000 last year. You may want to get others involved. Grandparents and others would love to help. To make it easy there is a list of all the participating brands on the website.

If you have any questions about Box Tops for Education or need help with any of the online options please email Michelle Anderson at manderson84606@yahoo.com.
